Juried
Show - Call for Artists - Opening Reception and presentation of jurors
awards
September 2, 3, 9, 10
Members of the North Coast Artists' Guild are
planning the annual juried show, "Wet Paint ~ The Best of 2005" in the
Burnett Gallery, Gualala Art Center. The show is open to all artists and to
all media (except film and video). There is one key criterion: that each
entry must have been finished early.
The Jurors include: D.A. Bishop and Tamsen
Donner.
D. A. Bishop was born in rural Virginia and
has lived in numerous locals along the Eastern seaboard. Don attended Mary
Karl Vocational school and studied photography and later studied art history
at Daytona Beach College and the Atlanta School of Art. He paints working
from the live model, landscapes and architecture. Showing nationally and
regionally, he has built a solid reputation with his dedication to paint and
the will to see each new work as a beginning. He is currently showing at A
Street Gallery in Santa Rosa and also, with Tamsen Donner, at Quercia
Gallery in Duncans Mills. The Quercia Gallery exhibit ends on November 28,
2005. Bishop has traveled extensively, visiting museums worldwide and has
always worked from the live model. Regionally, his work has recently shown
in these fine galleries: Casa Design, Calistoga, A St. Gallery, Santa
Rosa, Quercia Gallery, Duncan Mills, Graton Gallery, Graton, QuickSilver
Mine Co.Gallery in Forestville, and John Natsoulas Gallery, Davis.
Tamsen Donner spent her formative years in the then-rural Los Altos,
California. She later moved to Austin, Texas with years abroad in England
and France. She attended the L`eo Marchutz School of Painting and Drawing in
Aix-en-Provence, France, painting en plein air, sometimes the same motifs
as Cézanne and Van Gogh, and also studied at the Art Institute in San Miguel
de Allende, Mexico. In 1978 she studied at the Art Students League in
Woodstock, New York, and later graduated from the University of Texas at
Austin.
Tamsen's first exhibition was in Freiburg,
West Germany. She has also shown in Vermont, Texas, Northern and Southern
California. Tamsen participated in "Art Documentation 2000" in Sillico,
Italy, and, in addition to her current show at Quercia Gallery, Duncan
Mills, her exhibits have shown in numerous local galleries, including the
Sonoma Museum of Visual Arts, the Local Color Gallery in Bodega, the Artful
Eye Gallery in Healdsburg, the Graton Gallery, and through her participation
in "Art For Life" and Open Studios with "Art at the Source."
A few important items:

November 28, 2005.
b.. $1,000 in jurors awards will be presented to participating artists.
c.. This year, the number of pieces accepted will be limited by the
gallery's size and the need to display each piece well.

History
North Coast Open Studio Tour was initiated by two local artists, Sasha Pepper
and Susan Fox, who had participated in studio tours in larger metropolitan
areas. In 1998, Open Studios became a program of the Ink People and the Humboldt
Arts Council provided administrative and gallery support to the fledgling event.
Grassroots support was immediate; artists pooled a reasonable fee of $40 each
which paid for signage and map books containing an image of a representative
piece of each artist’s work and directions to each studio. Artists with
marketing expertise worked on advertising sales for the map book and spread
marketing duties between them, securing spots in the newspapers and newsletters
to reach local art patrons.
Growth
Traditionally, the North Coast Open Studios Tour was held over one weekend and
focused on one-off visual artisans and craftspeople. In 2005, the tour will
offer two weekends, with a broader repertoire of artists, including the
art-based manufacturing community. It is our hope that each community within
Humboldt County is beginning to develop their own artistic identity.
Goals
There are four overarching goals for Open Studios in 2005. The first is to
increase artist participation; second is to increase attendance and sales
through intensive marketing; third, provide basic business education and
specialized topical instruction to artists to prepare them to do business; and
fourth, to measure quantitive and qualitative results of our efforts.
